This sound and video installation was made for an exhibition in association with amnesty international, to promote human rights in Thailand. It is based on the interpretation of the symbol of amnesty international, the candle surrounded by barbed wire.
It consists of two parts. On the inside, the candle, or the fountain of life, symbolizing the ideal beauty and happiness. The right of every human to live a life without fear or pain, to a good standards of living and the freedom of thought and expression. |

From an external perspective, the spectator is placed in the position of those people, who are denied these basic human rights. The position of people grinded by the machinery of our modern malfunctioning world. People we walk past in our every day life, but take no notice of, people we here of in the media, which we are terrified and shocked by for a while but then quickly discard. People whose horror we will never even see.
Dividing these two aspects is the fence. An impenetrable boundary denying us access; the endless borders and defense mechanisms surrounding us, refusing us the right of passage. |
